The Panama Municipal Palace, known as the Demetrio H. Brid, stands as a neoclassical gem with a storied history. It has been at the heart of Panama's narrative for centuries. While the current building was completed in 1910 by Italian architect Genaro Ruggieri and Panamanian engineer Florencio Harmodio Arosemena, the Municipal Council of Panama remains the oldest government institution on the American continent's mainland. Located in Plaza de la Independencia, adjacent to the Metropolitan Cathedral and Canal Museum, it's named in honor of Demetrio H. Brid, the first defacto president of Panama.

This building has witnessed pivotal moments in Panama's history, including the proclamation of Panama's separation, the designation of its first constitutional president, the selection of the national flag, adoption of the national anthem, and the framing of its Constitution. The building underwent restoration in 1975 and more recently in 2016.

The facade showcases elements of Renaissance and Mannerist inspiration, adorned with white molding and vibrant coral-colored walls. Two iconic columns, crowned with sculptures from Greek mythology, grace the central axis.

My exploration around Plaza Independencia led me to a captivating perspective—a "Banksy-like graffiti tattoo image of a woman flying through the plaza," a remnant from a past film festival. The building, now missing its roof, offers a unique view of the Greek sculptures atop the Municipal Palace. This contrast between the updated and the discarded, neo-classical and colonial, graffiti and sculptures is undeniably breathtaking.

In this particular image, taken from the building's front, you'll find a lone balcony and statues of Lady Justice and Hermes. The overcast sky casts a purple hue that harmonizes beautifully with the coral facade, creating a striking visual composition.
